History

Organized in 1859.  County seat Burlington.  Named in honor of Col. A. M. Coffey, a member of the first Territorial Legislative Council.  Colonel Coffey died at Dodge City in 1879.   Map and text from History of Kansas, Noble Prentis, (Winfield: E.P. Greer. 1899)

• The Coffey County Visitor's Center on US 75 in Burlington is a good place to find out about upcoming events and local attractions. You can't miss the bright red Santa Fe caboose.
• Coffey County is home to the Wolf Creek nuclear power plant. For information about the cooling lake, environmental area, and plant visits, contact (620) 364-8831. The plant's cooling lake is open for public fishing; the Coffey County Chamber of Commerce (316) 264-2002 has a brochure on fishing there.
• The First National Bank of LeRoy has been kept "as-is" and is open for tours. Call (620) 964-2299.
• Lebo has a jail that's over a hundred years old and some fine old houses.
• The John Redmond Reservoir near New Strawn is a favorite lake for many Kansans. It offers boating, camping, fishing, and hunting.
