Karnowski Youth Poetry Contest

(Note: Separate from KAC youth contest. Students are encouraged to enter both contest. )

William J. Karnowski, District 4, Wamego, is pleased to announce the winners of the Karnowski Youth Poetry Contest.  The awards will be presented at the Sunday noon awards ceremony of the Kansas Authors Club convention in Topeka, October 18, 2009

  • First place: Jessica Renzelman, 14 year old, from District One for her poem "Them." She will receive an award certificate and a check for $100.00. 
  • Second place: Jake Johnson, 16 year old, from District Six,  for his poem "A Hunter's Morning."  He will receive an award certificate and a check for $50.00.
  • Third place: Jama Gleue, 9 year old, from District Four for the poem "Hide and Seek."  Jama will receive an award certificate and a check for $25.00. 

Karnowski reports that the quality of the poems was fantastic! He thanks the District Vice Presidents for their work in judging the entries from their areas. 10/3/2009


Rules for the Competition are:

  1. Send submissions to your KAC district Vice-President by June 15, 2009. ( find your vice-president’s name and address in the district section of the yearbook )
  2. Vice-Presidents may submit their three choices for consideration to Bill Karnowski by August 15, 2009.
  3. Poetry may be on any subject, in any style, with any structure, and any length.
  4. On the back of each entry write the contestants name, address, phone or email contact, district number, age on August 15, 2009, and grade level for the 2008/2009 school year.
  5. All poems will be returned to the poets is a self-addressed stamped envelope is enclosed. Otherwise entries will not be returned. If possible keep a copy of your original poem as a back-up.
  6. Three prizes will be awarded: First $100.00, Second $50.00, and Third $25.00.
  7. The awards will be presented at the Sunday 2009 Annual Convention and Writers Conference Awards Luncheon in Topeka, Kansas, on October 18, 2009.
  8. By entering the contest, youth writers and their parents give KAC permission to use their names and submission in print form.
